My gift on Christmas morning this year was a book I never intend to read.
You see, I had told my sister-in-law's family that what stood out to me about the birth story this year was the shepherds. This group of people going about their everyday lives, who encountered the supernatural, saw the Lord's radiance, were terrified, were comforted, were awed, hurried off to follow the Lord's message, found the heavenly message to be true, told everyone they knew, and then went back to their flocks praising God.
And then what?
For the next thirty years did they keep track of this baby Messiah? Did they know his family ran away to Egypt? Did they know he survived the massacre? Did they look up to the heavens every night waiting for another angelic visit that never came or were they scared to look up at all? Did these shepherds ever encounter Jesus in ministry three decades later? Were the people who heard the shepherds tell their story any of the people in the crowds around Jesus all those years later? Why, why the shepherds? Why a blaze of glory and then nothing else? What happened next?
I told the family it feels like we're missing the rest of the shepherds' story.
And I can relate. Philip and I had the supernatural explode into our everyday, we saw the Lord's glory, were terrified, comforted, awed, and hurried off to follow the Lord's message, the vision was true, we told everyone we knew, and now we are back in our home country praising God.
And then what?
On Christmas morning, I received this book...

The gift wasn't the content of the book. The family found a "shepherd" book and then they tore out the back section....

They gave me a shepherd book that is missing the end of the story.
Receiving this incomplete book was hysterical, delightful, and such a good Christmas morning memory.
I don't know what happened to the shepherds in the years after the birth of Jesus, but I do know one thing. It mattered that they went. We talk about them every year, not because of anything they accomplished or did for Jesus, but simply because they listened to an angelic message and went to see if it was true.
And it was.
