Expert at the Wheel

A couple of months ago I heard a sermon illustration that hasn't ceased to be an encouragement.  By sharing it with you, you'll gain some insight into our hearts right now, but it is likely applicable for your life as well.

The preacher described a Jeff Gordon Pepsi commercial (see here) in which the NASCAR super-star went undercover as a middle-aged, mini-van driver mildly interested in test driving a race car.  Once out of the parking lot, he held nothing back.  As he whipped around corners and sped through the streets, the car salesman in the passenger seat understandably feared for his life.  He thought they were out of control, that a maniac was at the wheel.  After Jeff throws it in reverse and brings the car to a stop just perfectly where they began, he reveals his identity.  Suddenly, the irate car salesman's perspective of the whole experience shifted and he asked, "Can we do it again?"

Do you see the message?  What feels out of control and terrifying is not when there is an expert at the wheel.  This isn't coming easy for me, which is probably why this image has come to mind nearly every day since I heard it.  I don't want to be the one to get to the end of this chaos and say, "OH, that was YOU?  Can we do it again?"

I want to ride this out with confidence in Christ at the wheel and somehow even savoring this journey with Him.
